In General
- Theme Naming: All of the humans have four letter names.
Humans
Yuru
The main character. A young blonde-haired boy who grew up in a secluded mountain village. He's extremely close to his sister Asa, who is being kept in a jail cell in the center of the town for unknown reasons. However, everything changes when the village is attacked by soldiers wielding modern-day weapons, led by a mysterious girl who claims to be the real Asa. Forced to leave his village behind and move to the modern world, he vows to get to the bottom of the mysteries presented to him and learn the truth about why he and Asa were separated.
- Aloof Archer: Yuru is most comfortable using a bow to hunt and defend himself. Due to a life spent Assassin Outclassin' in a secluded mountain village, Yuru has a Sugar-and-Ice Personality and is slow to trust others. Any Killing Intent aimed at him will be met with equally lethal force.
- Assassin Outclassin': Yuru has spent his whole life fending off "bandits" after his life. After a time, he realized that they were coming for him specifically when they lacked the dirt on their fingers to indicate a life of poverty.
- Big Brother Instinct: With the first chapter showing the first of the twins was born at night, which Yuru is considering his name, he's the older one and clearly acts this way to Asa...'s doppelganger.
- Experienced Protagonist: While still only sixteen years old, Yuru's life of hunting and repeatedly fighting off "bandits" (actually assassins) trying to kill him since he was even younger has made him a highly perceptive and deadly individual with a blade or bow that is quick and prepared to respond to any signs of lethal intent. His thoroughbred hunter's mentality is even once taken advantage of by Jin to set a trap for him.
- Fights Like a Normal: He has yet to awaken his "Seal" powers as they're only activated upon death, leaving him to fight entirely using his own skills as a hunter.
- Fish out of Water: Due to being raised in a mountain village with a medieval level of technology for his entire life, Yuru is completely ignorant of modern technology and society. Also, Played for Drama, as Yuru's bold reactions to the situations occurring and standoffishness are implied to be due to his medieval-esque hunter upbringing. Though it also may be that he's defended his life against "bandits" (who were more likely actually assassins sent against him) multiple times. He also considers being a serial groper to be "an act worthy of a thousand deaths" that should be punished by disemboweling one's self in shame, while Dera considers that to be too extreme of a stance on it.
- Harmful to Minors: Yuru spent most of his life fending off assassins out to capture or kill him, doing so entirely alone after his parents vanished. This clearly traumatized him and left him highly distrustful of others, especially since his father instructed him to get rid of the bodies by himself without letting anyone else know about it.
- Idiot Hero: Downplayed, but due to his Fish out of Water status, he can come across as very simple (or, in other characters' words, savage).
- I Just Want to Be Normal: He declares that he wants himself and Asa to have a normal, happy life as a family in chapter 21. Considering his parents have disappeared for years and apparently so has his sister until recently while he's been fighting off assassination attempts under the guise of bandits since he was young, it's an understandable want.
- Improbable Aiming Skills: In chapter 8, Yuru manages to shoot a man in the shoulder despite the fact he never saw the man in the first place, he was only told of the general direction of the guy, and it was pitch black in the middle of the night. It's kinda understandable that Asa was overwhelmed by it.
- Leeroy Jenkins: Downplayed in Chapter 4, where Yuru just went out for a walk (albeit while armed...) and quickly feels overwhelmed by the size of the city he's in when he takes it in. Unfortunately, he then reasons out a plan to locate Asa based on how his Tsugai can smell out her blood, which Left and Right are happy to oblige. Then he bursts out to "Asa" once he sees her with Jin while Right tries to warn him that the scent of "Asa"'s blood is old so he knows something off about her, leading Yuru to get caught in Ai's mouth because Jin expected Yuru to try to locate Asa in this way.
- Punny Name: Yuru's name sounds like the Japanese word for night...though he has blond hair while his twin's dark.
- Sugar-and-Ice Personality: While he tries to be standoffish during his conversating with the Kagemori group, seems to be outright uncomfortable as Asa cries or bows during the events of Chapter 11 and even reacts with outright horror when she hugs him from behind as he's leaving (because if she was a bear doing that, he'd be dead), he admits it was worth going to the Kagemoris to hear Asa say that their parents regretted being unable to bring him as well and is overwhelmed with emotion after Asa's hug convinces him that she was indeed his true little sister.
- Tsundere: He's usually more of a Sugar-and-Ice Personality, but he gets into this a bit in chapter 25 after he (tries to) refute Danji being grateful for him appearing to help with rescuing hostages from Higashi village, including Danji's other half. Funnily enough, his sister does the same five pages later.
- Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: He is understandably not willing to just let the Kagemori's attack on his village killing many of the people he lived with slide. In particular, since Gab was willing to claim responsibility for killing the villagers when Yuru asked her in the second chapter, he started butting heads with her the moment they first met in Chapter 8.
Dera
A man who was living undercover in Yuru's village. When the attack happens, he manages to kill the soldiers and rescues Yuru, giving him an amulet that allows him to control Left and Right.
- Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: After tens of chapters of the two constantly making snide or threatening remarks to each other, chapter 32 sees Dera responding with genuine outrage at receiving the information that "Prez has dirty designs in mind" by assuming that phrase was applying to Hana at the meeting where this intelligence was found (to his relief, it was elaborated that it wasn't).
- Disappeared Dad: Not unlike the fated twins, his father suddenly disappeared without a good explanation, though Dera has a bit more of a lead on his father than Yuru or Asa. Ken stating that Tadera Senior visited his mother suddenly and disappeared just as suddenly is met with Dera grumbling agreement along with knowing nods, implying the man was also distant and hard to keep track of on Dera's end.
- The Gambling Addict: While Hana's pointing out to that they can't afford to care for anyone else in chapter 31, he's just sadly checking when the next grade-one horse race is happening. She proceeds to yell "No more gambling!!" at him, only for him to insist "I'll win big next time!! Just you wait and see!!" and then make good on that by leaving to gamble again after Yuru wakes up from his sickness. He is then completely undaunted from this gambling loss after discussing it with fellow-losing-gambling-addict Hamura Keiichi there as well.
- Plausible Deniability: The Sole Survivor against Ivan ambushing the meeting wonders why Dera is at the meeting when he shouldn't know about it, suspecting that Hana told him about it. Dera claims that one of the now-dead bandits told him about the meeting, an explanation which is swallowed without a hitch.
- Practically Different Generations: Ryuu is 22 years older than Ken
- Screw the Money, I Have Rules!: He works for Higashi Village who appears to want Yuru and Asa's powers for their own gain, but declares that he has no interest in having a position of power by sacrificing the lives of two kids.
Hana
A woman allied with Dera. Yuru first meets her after fleeing the village in her car. She pretends to be Dera's husband, much to her chagrin.
- Blatant Lies: Tells Yuru that her car has a horse in it so that he'll get in and they can escape. She also lets out an excessive rant about how much she hates Dera and is sure that he's turned on Higashi Village to use Yuru's powers for his own ends after she attends a meeting Dera is absent for while she's actually living with him and Yuru, but this is .
- Celebrity Crush: Has an extremely blatant one on Jason Statham. She's upset when Dera shaves his facial hair because it was the only Statham-like feature he had. Posters of Jason Statham also cover the walls of her room.
- Cleanup Crew: Her regular job with the Higashi Village? Gravedigging.
Ken
A 13 year old half-Ethiopian half-Japanese boy who is revealed to be the (much) younger brother of Ryuu Tadera
- Disappeared Dad: His mother has died. He also had some contact with his and Ryuu's mutual father, but like Ryuu, he doesn't know where he is now.
- Only Sane Man: Has to explain to Yuru that murder is illegal. He's also entirely out of depth with the shady, violent and treacherous business that Higashi Village and Kagemori clans get up to. Later when Yuru is resting in the other room, he's the only one who is actually annoyed by all the noise the (impromptu) Daemon party is making while Yuru is trying to rest after having gotten sick.
- Practically Different Generations: Ken is 22 years younger than Ryuu.
Tsugai
Left and Right
Yuru's Tsugai. They're twin beings who were worshipped as deities in Yuru's village, and they come to his aid as Tsugai when the village is attacked. Right takes the form of a huge, hulking, musclebound man while Left takes the form of a tall, strong, very curvaceous woman.
Unusually for Tsugai, they don't fight based on Yuru's commands, not because they're rebellious, but because Yuru (who thought of them as gods) was reluctant to command them, so he gave them carte blanche to act on their own. That said, they will still listen to Yuru's orders when he gives them, they merely act with a greater degree of freedom than the average Tsugai.
Tropes that apply to both of them:
- Barbarian Long Hair: Their long manes of hair going down to around their knees go along well with their medieval-esque style of clothing.
- Blood Knight: It's pretty obvious that they relish a fight. Their response to Yuru boldly declaring he has no intention to run or hide when faced with the conundrum of the Higashimura and Kagemori conflict (while Asa, who has suffered numerous assassination attempts on her for years, is vehement on this being a bad idea) is to comically sparkle and be pleased at hearing this.
Right: (grinning from ear to ear) As Tsugai, we must obey our master.
Left: We can't help it if troubles come our way. - Immune to Bullets: In chapter 4, they both stand still in a hail of gunfire as they're pelted with shots from pistols, rifles, shotguns, and even a grenade launcher, and remain undamaged.
- Insistent Terminology: While most simply refer to them as "Left" and "Right," they refer to each other as "You on the Left" and "You on the Right" almost exclusively.
- Mark of the Supernatural: Both of them look almost completely human, except for the small horns on their heads. Right has two small horns growing out of the left and right side of his forehead, while Left has a single horn growing out of the center of her forehead. They also have strange, multicolored hair, with Left's being predominantly white aside from crimson bangs and Right's is predominantly crimson while his eyebrows and some of the hair on the top of his head as well as by his temples are white.
- Muscles Are Meaningful: The duo are quite muscular (Right in particular looks like he'd be a shoo-in for the World's Strongest Man competition) and are formidable indeed, even almost being Nigh-Invulnerable. The Kagemori head states in Chapter 11 that Left and Right should have been in the hands of someone other than a twin destined for the power of Fuu so now no one would be able to stop Yuru, meaning Left and Right are so formidable that they stand a chance against the destined powers of Kai and Fuu.
- Nigh-Invulnerable: Both of them are said to be made of stone (like the statues they were in), and as such, they're extremely resilient to damage, able to shrug off gunfire, explosions, and attacks from both blunt and bladed weapons. However, they're not completely unstoppable as two Tsugai against them quickly prove - one manages to immobilize Left by floating above her and applying a huge amount of force that she isn't able to shake off, and another just knocks Right around with martial arts, though by the end of the fight, neither Left nor Right still don't seem to be especially harmed. As chapter 8 declares most of the Tsugai that were used to attack the Kagemori mansion as having been killed, the pair having this trope makes them exceptional. Ivan's Tsugai swords, however, can actually cut through them...but as they converse after the battle against him, Left and Right are still aren't sure if they're even capable of actually dying!
- Odd Couple: Yuru's Tsugai, which consists of the male, more boisterous and usually smiling Right, and the female, more severe and usually stony-faced Left. This is exemplified in Chapter 4 when Yuru tells his Tsugai he intends to find his sister and get her to bring him to their parents and so asks them for their help. Right laughs that it sounds fun and he's eager to do something after four-hundred years. Left tells him that he should stop making light of the situation while their master is being serious, so Right asks for her opinion. She responds that she is more suited to hunting than being hunted in such a grave tone that Yuru understandably finds her answer to be quite intimidating (Right just continues smiling eagerly at it).
- One Head Taller: Both Left and Right are taller than any other normal humans in the story, but the male Right's still a whole head taller than the female Left.
- Only a Flesh Wound: As their fight against Ivan in chapter 20 indicates, dismembering one of their limbs isn't much of an impediment to them - while they will lose the function of the separated limb, they don't find the loss painful or incapacitating, and they can just re-attach the dismembered limb with stone adhesive. One of Ivan's swords even gets embedded by half of its length into the center of Left's breast and she's entirely unperturbed by it sticking in her.
- Voluntary Shapeshifting: The two are capable of transforming into white-colored doglike-and-demonic forms (though with only two arms that are also capable of grasping like primates) choke full of jagged edges making up their appearance. Much like how their Nigh-Invulnerability is explained by them having been in stone statues, this is also probably because they were in dog statues. Indeed, they actually appear in these forms first in the series, bringing down two helicopters, before going into their usual humanoid forms. They transform into these forms in Chapter 4 to quickly search for the scent of blood like Yuru's to help him find Asa (carrying him with them), implying that these forms move faster and have an even stronger sense of smell than their humanoids forms much like how dogs would generally outmatch humans in those regards. They are also capable of turning back into their statue forms at will as well.
Tropes that apply to Left:
- The Comically Serious: Despite still being drawn in a comical manner for sight gags along with Right, Left continues to have an unemotional expression or frown on her mouth.
- Death Glare: She is frequently drawn as having such an expression, portrayed with the face being almost featureless aside from her eyes and the center of it being framed in shadow.
- Ms. Fanservice: She's a tall, fit, busty, and very beautiful woman.
Tropes that apply to Right:
- Boisterous Bruiser: Downplayed - he doesn't have an especially larger-than-life attitude to him, but he remains an almost-constantly-smiling, more energetic, and pleasant individual to contrast the steely gaze of Left.
- Mr. Fanservice: He is a very tall, muscular, and handsome man.
- Walking Shirtless Scene: He's completely shirtless, only wearing a small vest on his upper body.
Kodetsu and Jiro
Hana's Tsugai Fore Tiger and Rear Wolf who take the form of a cat and a dog, they have lived in and are adapted to modern life.
In General
- Ambiguously Evil: Other than their bloody attack on the village, they haven't done anything particularly villainous as of yet. And considering how Asa swore revenge on Granny Yamaha before she left, they very well might have had it coming.
- Benevolent Boss: In relation to Evil Is One Big, Happy Family, the higher-ranking Kagemoris treat their lower-ranking family members and initiates with respect and kindness. When they find out a woman hired to attack their stronghold only took the job because she desperately needs money for her mother's medical bills, they take her on and agree to cover the debt themselves. Hikaru says that he abhors the brutal violence and betrayal that his family's business regularly requires and feels guilty that the other people have been brought into their fold to bloody their hands in his family's world, blurting out to Haruo and Makoto to quit working for them and find some other job.
- Equal-Opportunity Evil: As Akio put it, Kagemori is perfectly willing to have a bunch of nutjobs in tow. Asuma's mother ended up in the Kagemori clan from Gonzou finding her in the midst of attempting suicide (though her Tsugai would have prevented it had she actually gone through with it anyway).
- Even Evil Has Standards: A big reveal is that the family arguably isn't evil, with the worst thing they've done being killing many of the adults in the village. It's later made clear that they are under the impression that most of the people in the village were all coconspirators in efforts to kill Asa and highly likely involved in her parents' apparent deaths. It's made clear that they never harm children or non-combatants.
- Evil Is One Big, Happy Family: They all treat each other like beloved family members and are generally jovial and kind to each other, far more than you would expect from a villainous group. However, the Kagemori brothers are not completely united in opinion and goals over the powers of Break and Seal.
- Theme Naming: All of their major human characters have three-letter names. However, the Kagemoris' henchmen (such as Akio and Haruo) do not follow this trend.
- What Measure Is a Non-Human?: They are quite offended in Chapter 8 when a man of the group who attacked the Kagemori mansion reveals he treats Tsugai worse than livestock, not even naming them. Gab gets Gabriel to threaten the man with decapitation in fury over this, and Haruo's Tsugai speaks up to further cure him of his attitude.
Humans
Asa
Yuru's younger twin sister. First seen with the soldiers attacking Yuru's village and breaking through the cell grate in an attempt to kill the doppelganger behind it, she clearly does want Yuru to come with her...and is capable of magical power.
- Action Girl: She has dangerous supernatural powers outside of the standard gifts of being able to see and command Tsugai.
- Back from the Dead: Chapter 8 has her mention that She's already died from all of the assassination attempts on her once...but that's the end of her speaking for that chapter. Chapter 9 expands on it...
- Big Brother Worship: Asa seems to like Yuru a lot more than you'd expect despite recently thinking he might have been dead and having just saved a friend from being killed by him - we can only assume he left his mark on her in the time that two actually did spend together. Her portrait of him is...kinda bishie. While she meets him in person, she constantly requests to hug him and declares him acting aloof is so cool when he refuses. Chapter 20 sees her is "helping" Hikaru by doing supplementary artwork for his manga, but she's not proving very useful this time as she's repeating "I want to see Yuru" over and over and drawing all of the background characters as Yuru. When Yuru is talking to the Tsugai who was pretending to be Asa, she ends up throwing Death Glares at her for still referring to Yuru as brother (she called Yuru that out of force of habit).
- Came Back Strong: In addition to the prophecy predicting it, chapter 9 reveals just how she got her power - she was killed by assassins, sending her to a tsugai who resides in a land between the world of death and the physical world. She was then given the choice by the tsugai to accept them, return to life and have the power of Kai even if this power will cause people to be very interested in her...or simply die, and so, she revived with her power.
- Eyepatch of Power: Asa makes it clear she's distinct from her doppelganger by wearing a large eyepatch over her eye, and she proves the power part of the trope's name soon after.
- Hates Being Alone: Chapter 8 reveals that the time she spent in captivity in the village traumatized her and she has an intense fear of being alone. When trapped by the Yin-Yang Tsugai, she nearly has a nervous breakdown after a minute or two of isolation and doesn't calm down until Right puts a hand on her head to comfort her.
- Mark of the Supernatural: Chapter 9 revealed why she wears an eyepatch - that eye's sclera is black with a white iris and lacking a pupil. She got it after reviving with her power.
- Punny Name: Asa can mean morning. It should be noted that Asa has dark hair, unlike Yuru's blond hair.
- Revenge: We're not sure why yet, but Asa swears to exact retribution against Granny Yamaha before leaving in chapter 2. This is because she sincerely believes that the adults of Higashi Village were the ones who killed her and her parents.
- Tsundere: She's generally more pleasant than her brother is, but she is still just as quick to abundantly deny the possibility that she cares about Danji after she saves the hostages from Higashi Village as her brother is. Appropriately, Danji remarks that the two are like peas in a pod (to Yuru's further grumpiness).
- Trauma Button: In chapter 8, she reveals that she's terrified of being alone.
- Wham Line:
Asa: I've already died once. I was killed by the assassins of Higashi Village.
Gab
A young girl that participated in the attack on Yuru's village. She controls Gabriel, a Tsugai that manifests as a massive, many-eyed set of jaws that can bite nearly anything clean in half.
- Action Girl: It comes with the territory when you're a Tsugai user working with the Kagemoris. She's out on the front lines with Gabriel during the manga's beginning and shown to be active in an effort to rescue Asa during a flashback.
- Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Like a certain other red-wearing shorty, Gab is a highly dangerous individual in a fight, though in her case it's just as much due to her having Gabriel with her.
- Punny Name: Name after the onomatopoeia for biting.
- Wouldn't Hurt a Child: She has the highest confirmed body count due to her having Gabriel massacre the adults in Yuru's village, but she leaves the children alone.
Jin
An ally of Asa and Gab. A serious, bespectacled man who controls a Tsugai pair named Ai and Makoto (collectively Scavenger). The former is a massive anglerfish-like creature that can swallow anything, while the latter is a much smaller fish that can regurgitate whatever Ai swallows.
- Older Than He Looks: Downplayed - with his severe expression and facial hair, it's a bit surprising to know that he's actually the youngest of the Kagemori brother trio. However, he's still clearly not far from his brothers' age and they are all obviously adults - just the other two look much softer than Jin.
Kagemori Attendants
A set of four adopted siblings who work had been raised by and work for the Kagemori Family.
Haruo
An attendant of the Kagemoris who primarily works with Jin. Older brother of Akio. Younger brother of Natsuki and Fuyuki. Wields a Tsugai of a hare and tortoise.
- Only Sane Man: Frequently notes the messed-up mindset of the twins either out loud on in his head.
- Big Brother Instinct: When Akio is revealed to be The Mole he offers to help beg for forgiveness from the Kagemori Head so that Akio could be spared
Akio
An attendant of the Kagemoris who primarily works with Jin. Youngest brother of Haruo, Natsuki, and Fuyuki. Wields a very large Tsugai known as Mountain God.
- Bald of Evil: There's not a hair upon his head, and he turns out to be a traitor to Kagemori that has a Lack of Empathy to go with his inability to feel pain.
- An Arm and a Leg: Ai tears off his right hand by impaling it on of its teeth as he came over to assassinate Asa with a long crowbar.
- Arrow Catch: Downplayed - Akio catches a long, broken-off tooth from Ai that Yuru threw at his head. Haruo was suitably overwhelmed at the sight of this feat. Jin ends up realizing this occurrence was an indicator something was off about Akio, as Yuru fights with appropriate force in kind, so Jin realized that Yuru sensed Akio was trying to kill him despite Jin not ordering that.
- Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Despite his willingness to betray the Kagemoris and clearly stating he has trouble being able to feel other's pains, he is clearly saddened at the destruction of his Mountain God Tsugai while he makes his escape, staring at the pieces of the relics for one of them.
- Feel No Pain: Akio says he's always never felt pain, and he admits to not being able to feel other people's pain either. This turns out to be a key reason behind his betrayal - he ended up finding a community of people online like him which thus led him to find a person who may have been one of his parents who put him up to it.
- Made of Iron: Despite having only recently having the loss of an arm bandaged up, Akio manages to rapidly escape Kagemori captivity without a trace when Midori releases him to protect his master from one of the Mountain God Tsugai being hijacked into a suicide bomber. Akio then goes on to manage to choke a man to death with just one arm even while the man's two snake-like Tsugai bite into him, looking entirely unperturbed during the struggle. Of course, he is greatly helped in this regard by being unable to feel pain.
Natsuki
An attendant of the Kagemoris who primarily works with the Kagemori Head. Sister of Haruo, Akio, and Fuyuki. Wields a Tsugai that punishes naughty children.
- Team Mom: provides both Gab and Asa with an education.
Fuyuki
An attendant of the Karemoris who primarily works with the Kagemori Head. Brother of Haruo, Akio, and Natsuki. Wields the Tsugai Blacklist capable of capturing information from another person's Tsugai.
Asuma
Middle child of the Kagemori brothers. Has an unsettling appearance.
- Face of a Thug: His default expression gives off extremely shady and sinister vibes. Even his Tsugai, while just insisting to Yuru that Asuma is not his enemy, has to wonder "how did he come to always wear that scheming look?" and admit that Asuma's face doesn't help him in that regard either when Yuru brings it up.
- Night and Day Duo: His Tsugai: Asagiri is strong during the daytime and Yozakura is strong during nighttime.
Hikaru
Eldest of the Kagemori brothers. A manga artist who generally wants nothing to do with the family's business.
- Scary Shiny Glasses: He does this in chapter 12. It turns out that he's just talking to his editor about his deadline, who even noticed the Scary Shiny Glasses thing going on with him and asked why his room is so dark, making him look like the boss of some evil organization. This had the perfectly reasonable explanation of the damages from the recent fight in the Kagemori mansion causing some power outages.
- White Sheep: In general wants nothing to do with any of the shady business the Kagemori's are up to. When the family suggests disposing of the gardener using Ai, Hikaru is horrified.
Gonzou
Head of the Kagemori family.
- One-Man Army: When working with his Tsugai he becomes this.
Tsugai
Gabriel
Gab's Tsugai. A massive set of disembodied jaws that can bite through anything in an instant. They can also assume a much smaller and cuter form.
- Fun Size: He's capable of appearing in a much smaller form. This makes him look fairly cute for a disembodied black flame with two sets of three eyes above and below a mouth of flat teeth. His teeth are also more symmetrically-sized compared to his larger forms, which are more realistic and unevenly-shaped.
- Hidden Depths: You probably didn't expect a disembodied black flame with two sets of three eyes above and below a mouth of flat teeth to be a decent artist in the ukiyo-e style, but nonetheless Chapter 4 shows that Gabriel is. Indeed, as his depiction of Right adequately portrays the proportions of the muscles in his arm, Gabriel could even be considered a better artist than many surviving historical examples of the art style.
- Overly Long Name: Apparently, Gab named the two halves of Gabriel "Joe William Frederic Gabriel I" and "Kirk Douglas Woodgrave Gabriel II".
- Punny Name: Name after the onomatopoeia for biting.
Ai and Makoto
Jin's Tsugai Scavenger. Ai is a massive anglerfish-like creature that can swallow just about anything and use its "light" to attract unsuspecting prey.Makoto is a small, cute fish that can regurgitate anything that Ai swallows up.
- Hammerspace: The pair's primary ability is to swallow and then conjure up items
Hare and Tortoise
Haruo's Tsugai, a Hare and Tortoise pair similar to that of Aesop's Fable
- Force and Finesse: Tortoise primarily relies on his massive (adjustable weight) while Hare zips around opponents looking for openings
- Lightning Bruiser: Hare
- Mighty Glacier: Tortoise
Asa(?)
The supposed sister of Yuru who had been kept locked away in the village hold for unknown reasons
Granny Yamaha
A village elder who appears to run Higashi Village
- Vague Age: Is known to be the oldest person in the village but no one seems to know how old she is.
Kyouka
A village woman with who had long gotten along with Yuru
- Parental Substitute: After losing two of her children to a rockslide, she took in Danji after he was brought to the village as his own, with him calling her his Ma.
- Token Good Teammate: Aside from Yuru's parents, Kyouka is the only one to object to the village's treatment of him and Asa. She tasks Danji, one of her two daemons, to watch over Yuru and protect him against Granny Yamaha's machinations.
Danji
Yuru's best friend who is constantly exasperated by Yuru's tendency to go out to the dangerous mountain alone.
- Fish out of Water: Like Yuru, Danji has no frame of reference for the world outside of Higashi Village. He's terrified of being raced down a highway by Oshira-sama and gawps at the size of Japanese office buildings.
- Muggle Best Friend: Unlike his best friend Yuru, Danji has no idea what's happening or the existence of assassins out for the twins. He's frequently seen panicking and is nowhere near as capable in a fight as Yuru is. Subverted when it's revealed that Danji is in fact a zashiki-warashi daemon, charged by his Ma to protect Yuru as best he can while Granny Yamaha tried to control Yuru.
Azami
A particularly unlucky 7 year-old girl living in Higashi Village at the start of the series.
- The Woobie: Hoo boy has she been through the wringer. Not only does her mother get beheaded right in front of her but then when the village is attacked again, she finds herself taken hostage. Then because she had been taken to the outside world, she cannot go back home or else be locked away (possibly)
